Abstract
Liq. crystals displaying a Colh (columnar hexagonal) phase can display a cooperative chiral state. In the authors model the hexagonal symmetry is an integral feature that favors the chiral state. This latter point is also supported by the recent work on fluxional 8 vertex Zr4+ mesogens (Trazaska et al. 1999) with the same ligands as used in this paper, wherein no increase was found in the CD signal on cooling from the isotropic phase into the oblique columnar phase.
