Nate grew up in Grand Rapids, MI. He attended Calvin College, graduating in 2012 with a B.S. in Chemistry. While at Calvin, Nate began research under the direction of Prof. Carolyn Anderson, working towards the development of a gold-catalyzed alkyne functionalization methodology. Nate carried out his graduate studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he joined the laboratory of Prof. David Nicewicz. Nate's graduate research focused on mechanism and methodology development in the area of photoredox catalysis. After receiving his PhD in 2017, Nate joined the Swager group where he is currently investigating the synthesis of polymers with novel mechanical properties.
