Richard Liu grew up in Toronto, Canada and obtained his A.B. degree in chemistry and physics from Harvard University in 2015. At Harvard, he worked with Profs. Theodore Betley and Eric Jacobsen on metal nitrenoid chemistry and organocatalysis. Richard earned his Ph.D. degree in 2019 from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). During his graduate studies, he was a member of Prof. Stephen Buchwald’s research group, where he developed and investigated organic reactions catalyzed by Cu, Ni, and Pd complexes.
